It's called a bath. You never get wet.
You lie down, cover up with a blanket, and let the sound of singing bowls and gongs do the rest. Here's what a sound bath actually is — and what it can do for a tired nervous system.
No experience needed. Nothing to learn. Come as you are.
What is a sound bath?
A sound bath is simply rest, through sound. No water, no swimming — the "bath" is the wash of sound itself. You settle onto a mat, close your eyes, and crystal and metal singing bowls, gongs, and chimes fill the room with slow, resonant waves. Nothing to learn, nothing to perform, nothing to get right. You rest, and let the sound do the work.
Sound is something you feel — not just hear.
Your mind hasn't stopped running all day. A sound bath is one of the few things that can quiet it — not by force, but by giving your body something gentler to follow, until it finally settles. Here's the simple version of what's happening while you lie there.
Steady sound gives a busy mind one thing to follow
Instead of a hundred open tabs, there's a single, resonant tone that rises and fades. Many women find their thoughts stop racing almost on their own — no effort, no "clearing your mind."
The body softens without being told to
As the sound settles, breathing tends to slow and shoulders drop. This is your nervous system shifting out of alert and into its rest-and-restore state — the one that's so hard to reach at 2 a.m.
You get to simply be — for once
No phone. No one needing anything. For forty-five quiet minutes, you're not the one holding it all together. That pause is the whole point, and it's often the part women miss most.
Researchers are still studying exactly how sound affects the body. What we can honestly say is what women tell us they feel: calmer, lighter, and more able to rest. A sound bath is complementary support — a place to exhale — not a medical treatment.
The reasons she keeps coming back.
You come in carrying everything. For an hour, nothing is asked of you — and most women walk out lighter than they came in. Here's what a sound bath tends to give.
A quieter mind
For the racing thoughts that won't switch off — a way to slow the spin without forcing it.
Deeper rest & easier sleep
Many women leave loose-limbed and heavy-eyed — and find that night's sleep comes more easily.
A softer nervous system
Tension you've carried so long it feels normal — given room to let go for an hour.
Room to feel
In grief, divorce, or a hard season, sometimes tears come. That's welcome here. Nothing is asked of you.
Presence, effortlessly
No mantra to master, no meditation "skill" to fail at. The sound holds your attention for you.
A reset you can feel
Not an idea of calm — an actual, physical settling you notice in your body on the drive home.
These reflect what our guests commonly experience. Sound baths are holistic wellness — complementary support alongside your medical and mental-health care, never a substitute for treatment, diagnosis, or crisis care.
Here's exactly what a session is like.
-
You arrive, and you slow downCome a few minutes early. We dim the lights, and you settle onto a mat with a blanket and cushions. That's it.
-
You close your eyes and lie backFully clothed, fully supported. For 45–60 minutes, the only instruction is: rest. You can drift, and yes — you're allowed to fall asleep.
-
The sound washes over youBowls, gong, and chimes rise and fall in slow waves. There's nothing to follow or figure out. You just let it move through you.
-
You leave slowly, and softerWe bring you back gently. Take your time getting up. Most women leave quiet, loose, and a little tender — in the best way.

For twenty years, Mary has been the calm in other women's storms. She built Tropical Refuge — a Sanctuary by the Sea in Manhattan Beach — as a place where the women who hold everyone together could finally be held. Her sound baths carry that same intention: an hour where the only thing asked of you is to rest.
"You don't have to earn your rest, Beautiful. Come lie down. Let the sound carry the rest."
Blessings, Mary
Honest answers to what women ask.
None at all. That's the beauty of it — there's nothing to practice or get right. You lie down, and the sound does the work. First-timers are welcome every single session.
It doesn't have to be either. A sound bath is simply rest through sound — you can experience it as deeply peaceful without any belief system attached. Bring whatever meaning you like, or none. Both are right.
Then your body needed it. Drifting off is completely normal and completely fine — the rest still reaches you. We'll bring you back gently at the end.
Plan for about 45–60 minutes. Wear something soft and warm you can lie down in comfortably — layers are ideal, since the body cools as it settles. Everything else (mat, blanket, cushions) is here for you.
Sound baths are gentle and widely enjoyable. As a caring precaution, if you're pregnant, have a history of seizures or acute sound sensitivity, or are managing a health condition, please check with your doctor first and let us know so we can look after you. A sound bath is complementary support, never a replacement for medical or mental-health care.
Yes. The Refuge app has sound baths and rest sessions you can reach for anywhere, any hour — free to start. Many women use the app between studio visits, and for the nights that rest can't wait.
You've carried the sound of everyone else's needs. Come lie down, and let something carry you.
